Mutebi says Uganda must change approach

Former Cranes coach Mike Mutebi believes that Uganda will have to first “do certain things right” if the East Africans are to grace the Nations Cup again. The Cranes last appeared in 1978.

Mutebi, Cranes coach mid-2000s, was speaking to supersport.com in the aftermath of the just ended Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea, which was won by Ivory Coast after an 9-8 penalty shootout victory over Ghana.

Ironically, Uganda beat losing finalists Ghana in Kampala and picked a point away in Kumasi in the qualifiers, on top of seeing off Guinea at home before losing the return leg.

But Mutebi says that the fact that Uganda beat the trio and the latter still qualified ahead of the Cranes; going ahead to make a good account of themselves in Equatorial Guinea, is testament enough that some things need to change.

“Certain things are not done right,” he said, adding, “Until we do those things right, we shall not go anywhere. Yes we beat Guinea (lost with identical 2-0 scoreline away) and Ghana here but who qualified?

“Ghana were in our group but they played the final. Despite beating Ghana in the qualifiers, we are not at their level.”

Mutebi added: “When you look at most of that Ghana team, most have been together and were under 20 world champions in 2009.

“Our problem is we do not have defined structures. There is no under 17 or under 20 activity for example. We need functional structures, not just for tournaments.”
