MP Nsereko acquires SCVU

Kampala Central Member of Parliament Muhammad Nsereko has taken over Sports Club Victoria University (SCVU) after buying majority shares in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) outfit.

Nsereko, a former player himself albeit not at the very top level, has acquired 70 per cent shares; hitherto majority shareholder, Serbian Simo Dubajic retaining 30 per cent.

The sale comes at a time when the club were struggling financially, although Dubajic dismisses that notion saying “Financially, there is nothing we could not afford,” and that “No, I had not lost interest in an entity that I created.”

Addressing the media in Kampala on Friday evening while officially announcing the change of guard, Dubajic was confident the deal was good for both parties and for the club.

“As of today (Friday) 10 O’clock, new management has taken over,” said the Serb adding, “When I first met the honourable, I was convinced that this partnership would continue to improve the club and the national team.

“I will remain a nationalist, club director and shareholder, and although not very active in the day-to-day running of the club, I will still be part of the club’s activities.”

The finances in the trade remain confidential although the deal is believed to be just over Shs200m. Nsereko is now officially the new club chairman and managing director.

“I want to congratulate Mr Simo Dubajic here who has led the club with much desire and excellence,” said Nsereko.

“Ours is a very strategic partnership. We aspire to continue running the club fundamentally and professionally and for sure, we aspire to win titles.” All SCVU coaching and playing staff have been retained, according to Dubajic.

SCVU lost considerable support from Victoria University after Buckingham University of England pulled out from offering degrees at the institution in 2013, thus affecting the club’s funding.

The university has since been bought off by businessman Sudhir Ruparelia and ties with the sports club time severed.

Dubajic bought the club in 2010, then in the lower league, and embarked on a one-year campaign that saw SCVU promoted to the topflight competition in just a single year – in May 2012.

They went on to win the Uganda Cup in 2013 and represented the country in the Caf Confederations Cup despite being bundled out at first time of asking.

Last season they finished second in league and won the Nile Basin Cecafa. Savio Kabugo, Benjamin Ochan, Dennis Guma and Murushid Jjuko are some of the players they have contributed to the different national team set-ups.
