Ssentamu is Uganda's finest

Yunus Ssentamu is the 2014 Nile Special Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) Footballer of the Year after being voted by the scribes on Monday.

The AS Vita striker earned the honours at a monthly press meeting held at Imperial Royale ahead of Pretoria University’s Geoffrey Massa and Simba attacker Daniel Sserunkuma.

Ssentamu scored all three Uganda’s goals at the 2014 Africa Nations Championships despite the Cranes failing to get out of the group at the local-based players’ tournament in South Africa.

The 20-year- was also instrumental in his DRC club’s surge to the Caf Champions League final despite not winning it. Ssentamu garnered 22 votes, two ahead of Massa, with Sserunkuma failing to pick up any.

Ssentamu is also in the running for the Sports Personality of the Year award alongside basketball player Claire Lamunu, basketball player and netball player Peace Proscovia, and athlete Moses Kipsiro.

The striker was also named by Caf alongside Massa among the top 20 best African football players of 2014.
