Unbeaten Vipers stay top

Vipers go into the Uganda Premier League (UPL) first half break top of the standings after drawing goalless with Bright Stars on Tuesday to end the initial period of the campaign unbeaten.

The result moved the 2010 champions to 35 points having won 10 out of 15 games. And now going into the second round in a fortnight, coach Edward Golola’s men remain strong favourites to win their second league title.

Defending champions KCC are second after making light work of lowly Entebbe 3-0 in a match played at their home ground in Lugogo.

Herman Wasswa, William Wadri and Brian Umony scored the goals as coach Abdallah Mubiru’s side went to 30 points, five behind Vipers.

SC Villa’s match away to Sadolin Paints was abandoned with the clock ticking away. The visitors were leading 1-0 at the time.

This followed the home side’s fans pelting of objects at match officials and visiting team’s technical bench.

Similar events happened last Friday when Bul fans pelted objects at the match officials as the visitors were leading 2-1, forcing the game to be abandoned with a minute to play. The Fufa disciplinary committee have since ruled Bul lost the match by forfeiture 3-0.

Villa, however, remain third on 30 points after 14 games with only one goal separating them from second-placed KCC. Erisa Ssekisambu and Karim Ndugwa had scored Villa’s goals.

Giants Express’ woes continued as they fell 2-1 at home to strugglers Soana. Abdallah Nyanzi and Rashid Kyambadde scored for the visitors while Emmanuel Kalyowa’s penalty could not save coach Wasswa Bbosa’s men.

The result saw the Red Eagles finish the first round in a distant eighth with just 21 points from 15 games having won six and lost an equal number.

URA could only draw 1-1 with Bul in Jinja to end the half of the campaign fourth on 27 points, eight behind the leaders. Jonathan Mugabi netted for URA while Patrick Asiku scored for Bul.

Soana, Entebbe and Rwenshama ended the first half as the bottom three in that order, which leaves their survival chances slim.
