Bengo stars in Villa win

Steven Bengo scored one and made the other as 10-man SC Villa beat SC Victoria University 2-0 in a Uganda Premier League (UPL) match played at KCCA Stadium, Lugogo on Friday.

Erisa Ssekisambu headed in the second from the midfielder’s free kick as the 16-time league champions dislodged KCC from second place to come within four points of Vipers, who lead the table on 30 points.

Coach Sam Ssimbwa’s Villa made an early start with Bengo dictating play. But towards the end of first half, SCVU got hold of proceedings.

And soon their pressure told as Villa defender Fahad Kawooya saw red for taking down a Victoria University player in the box.

Referee Alex Muhabwe pointed to the spot but SCVU forward Mutyaba Muzamil, who was the hosts’ engine, saw his kick from the spot come off the upright.

They were soon to pay for the miss as a Villa counter attack ended with a cross being whipped in from the right.

SCVU defender Martin Mpuuga could only stop it with his hand to gift Villa a penalty. Bengo made no mistake from six yards to send his side into half time leading 1-0.

Ssekisambu completed the beating four minutes into the second half, beautifully glancing in Bengo’s free-kick from the right.

“I wanted to dislodge KCC from second place and I’m happy we have done that,” said Villa coach Ssimbwa.

The fifth defeat for SCVU left coach Morley Byekwaso’s side in 10th place with just 13 points.

“I’m impressed with the performance and the chances created in the first half,” said SCVU’s Byekwaso, adding, “But we always struggle in the second half and miss chances. We need to improve in that area.”
